If a picture is worth a 1000 words...what about a video?

Video is a powerful medium that can speak to people on so many different levels. This is one of the reasons I appreciate YouTube so much, to have access to a wide variety of videos. 

Overseas living is sometimes hard to explain in a way that others might understand. This "Who is on first?" sketch is one of the classics of Laurel and Hardy comedy that also serves as a great illustration of what happens sometimes when we communicate cross-culturally. 

This confusion or miscommunication in conversations is something I experience from time-to-time with my Spanish co-workers, not to mention with my Spanish husband!

 Today, our team met to talk about some details for next fall's incoming class of interns. I was asked to bring some suggested dates for the Intern Orientation so that we can decide on the dates as a team. Our conversation lasted more than an hour! And in the end, nothing was decided. We will have to meet again next week when we have more information. 

 After the conversation ended, I found myself frustrated and confused. As I mulled over the conversation, I realized that the stated objective, choosing dates for the Intern Orientation, shifted during the conversation, but it happened without specifically stating the change. The new objective was to move the Intern Application deadline to allow more candidates to apply before the deadline.

What keeps me going at times like this is to remember WHY we even want to host an Intern Orientation: 

 The internship program was designed to give young Spanish Christians, recent graduates, a chance to try out ministry for a short time to see what it is like. Many decide to continue. Even those who don't grow significantly in their relationship with God and their ability to share their faith with others. 

 Agape Spain's faith goal is to see God raise up at least 5 new interns or becarios for the next school year.

 Please pray for the incoming Intern (Becario) class of 2020-2021:
  • Pray for wisdom and coordination to effectively promote this opportunity.
  • Pray that God would move many young Spanish Christians to consider how to serve Him with their lives, their gifts, their talents.
  • Pray for discernment as they apply and go through the interview process.
  • Pray that God would raise up 5 special interns to work with Agape Spain this fall.

Meet the Monkey on Mondays!

Every week, heck, every day God is working in our lives....but how aware are we? How have you seen Him show up this week? One struggle in communicating regularly was related to the "slow" nature of ministry. Sometimes, it is hard to see what God is doing. One rationale that dominated  my thinking is that maybe it is that God is working much more slowly here, so rather share news each month, I may have to wait, 6, 9, 12 months to have a story to tell. However, as I make this shift to share a "blip" from each day, it has revolutionized the way I see God's work here, in my personal life and in ministry. Immigrant moms advancing together

An American, a Brazilian, a Spaniard and 9 Moroccan women walk into a neighborhood center....it sounds like the beginning of a joke, right? God has a great sense of humor! Let me tell you how this story works out.... My church in Spain has an amazing outreach ministry in a city neighborhood highly populated by Moroccan immigrants. While immigration has increased globally, Catalunya has one of the highest percentages of immigration world-wide.  This drastic and relatively rapid change is historic and also traumatic for a Spanish system that is not prepared to receive so many immigrants. We personally have seen the burdening effects of immigration in our schools, at our hospitals and in our neighborhoods.  Many of those who come from Morocco are the poorest of the poor. They arrive looking for work and a better life. They come without having learned the language.
