Board games, Books, Bartering and the Bible

Aaron is now 10-years-old. Within the last year, he discovered new truths about Santa Claus and the source of his gifts at home. So, with this in mind, the grandmothers were given new freedom to try different types of gifts for Christmas this past December. Both of Aaron's grandmothers hit the bull's eye with their gifts!

His Spanish grandmother decided to give money so that he could choose what he wanted this year. He chose a game that he was introduced to when accompanying me to a New Staff Training event a couple years ago. The game is CATAN, (pictured left.)



His American grandmother sent books. Aaron really likes to read and this skill has been supported and fed by the generosity of Yaya Nama (my mother's grandmother name in Catalan) by buying and sending many books over the years. 


This year was no different. In fact, we recently visited a local book store and Aaron found a series that he discovered during a visit to the U.S. called Bad Guys. In Catalan, it's called Males Besties. 
I suggested that we wait to buy any of these books because we might be receiving some of the same books in English. Sure enough, this week a package arrived from Yaya Nama of the Boxed set of Bad Guys in English. After 4 days, he has already read 4 of the 8 books!



In addition to reading, this week we also tried our hand at sales. There is an application you can use to buy and sell second-hand products called WALLAPOP. (This app was actually created by a 3-man from the Barcelona area!)

Aaron decided to clean out his room and identified one of his Playmobile sets to sell off using the Wallapop app. 

Within 12 hours, an interested buy from town expressed her desire to buy. So, we created a bit more space in his room and he added some spending money to his pocket. We are beginning to teach him about saving, titheing and being wise with money. Never can start too young with this topic!

On Sunday at Sunday School, Aaron received an optional devotional book we had ordered. All the other kids also received the book so maybe everyone requested the extra devotional. It's a day-to-day devotional to do at home in preparation for the lessons on Sunday. 

Aaron is our Number One Disciple! 

Please pray for Aaron...
that he would continue to grow in wisdom and stature and be an influence among his peers in town and at church.
that he would continue to develop his interests and talents, especially drawing.
that we would teach him wisdom in being a wise steward with his all of his resources, money and everything else.
that God would draw Aaron into a close, personal relationship with Jesus.

Yes, may Aaron grow in wisdom and statuem and be an influence among his peers in town and at the church, and that he may continue to develop his interests and talents, especially drawing. He's a great artist already! And may he grow to be wise and a great steward of all his resources. And finally may he have a personal relationship with Jesus. With great parents, how can he lose? Meet the Monkey on Mondays!

Every week, heck, every day God is working in our lives....but how aware are we? How have you seen Him show up this week? One struggle in communicating regularly was related to the "slow" nature of ministry. Sometimes, it is hard to see what God is doing. One rationale that dominated  my thinking is that maybe it is that God is working much more slowly here, so rather share news each month, I may have to wait, 6, 9, 12 months to have a story to tell. However, as I make this shift to share a "blip" from each day, it has revolutionized the way I see God's work here, in my personal life and in ministry. Immigrant moms advancing together

An American, a Brazilian, a Spaniard and 9 Moroccan women walk into a neighborhood center....it sounds like the beginning of a joke, right? God has a great sense of humor! Let me tell you how this story works out.... My church in Spain has an amazing outreach ministry in a city neighborhood highly populated by Moroccan immigrants. While immigration has increased globally, Catalunya has one of the highest percentages of immigration world-wide.  This drastic and relatively rapid change is historic and also traumatic for a Spanish system that is not prepared to receive so many immigrants. We personally have seen the burdening effects of immigration in our schools, at our hospitals and in our neighborhoods.  Many of those who come from Morocco are the poorest of the poor. They arrive looking for work and a better life. They come without having learned the language.
