Investing in Maria Casanova

In celebration of Women's history month, during this month of March, I want to share with you about the the privilege I have to work with all kinds of women in Ágape, some volunteers and others long-term staff. 

Today, I celebrate María Casanova, a Spanish woman who serves on the Operations team in our Ágape National Office in Valencia.

I met María 3 years ago when she applied to join our staff full-time. María is unusual in our evangelical environment because she is Catholic. When she was younger she considered entering a convent, but, in the end, did not go that route. It has been a blessing for María to discover that she can serve the Lord and minister to others in a full-time way although she has not entered a convent.

Because of her energy and friendliness, she has brought so much joy to our staff as she serves tirelessly to bring clarity, explain procedures and equip staff to be even more effective in their administrative responsibilities.

She is such an interesting person because she was worked in a variety of roles over the years. She studied law at the university and one of the roles she had was working in Germany for some time as a lawyer at an international law firm. María has used her experience and talent as a lawyer to help Ágape on a variety of different topics. 

Over the last two years, she completed Ágape's New Staff Training, including lessons about being filled with the Holy Spirit and walking in the power of the Holy Spirit. Recently through a series of retreats, María has been teaching a number of Catholic groups about the role of the Holy Spirit in a Christian's life.


María and I have begun to meet every 1-2 weeks in a season of seeking God's direction in her life as she considers new opportunities to serve Him in the future.

Please pray for María: that the Lord would affirm her gifts and His calling on her life.
Pray that He would specifically show her areas where He wants her to grow. Pray that He would specifically show her in which context He wants her to serve in the upcoming years. Pray that He would provide new supporters to join her financial support team as she seeks to continue minitry into the future.

Meet the Monkey on Mondays!

Every week, heck, every day God is working in our lives....but how aware are we? How have you seen Him show up this week? One struggle in communicating regularly was related to the "slow" nature of ministry. Sometimes, it is hard to see what God is doing. One rationale that dominated  my thinking is that maybe it is that God is working much more slowly here, so rather share news each month, I may have to wait, 6, 9, 12 months to have a story to tell. However, as I make this shift to share a "blip" from each day, it has revolutionized the way I see God's work here, in my personal life and in ministry. A specific tool I am using to deliver my messages and stories to you across the ocean is MailChimp, an email marketing platform online; and, although I am sure that I am not getting nearly as much out of MailChimp as I could, but just the fact to be getting any news out at all is a big step for me. Immigrant moms advancing together

An American, a Brazilian, a Spaniard and 9 Moroccan women walk into a neighborhood center....it sounds like the beginning of a joke, right? God has a great sense of humor! Let me tell you how this story works out.... My church in Spain has an amazing outreach ministry in a city neighborhood highly populated by Moroccan immigrants. While immigration has increased globally, Catalunya has one of the highest percentages of immigration world-wide.  This drastic and relatively rapid change is historic and also traumatic for a Spanish system that is not prepared to receive so many immigrants. We personally have seen the burdening effects of immigration in our schools, at our hospitals and in our neighborhoods.  Many of those who come from Morocco are the poorest of the poor. They arrive looking for work and a better life. They come without having learned the language.
