Jesus and Basketball On the Costa del Sol

One of the staff I work with is Abraham Crespo, (pictured right) who is staff with Athletes in Action in Málaga. This past July he was part of the staff team that hosted the 16th annual Campus Villa de Frigiliana Basketball Camp. More than 50 boys and girls from all over Spain arrived in Frigiliana, said good-bye to their parents, pulled on their high-tops and reported, ready to train, learn, participate, laugh ´til they cried. 



During the week, the staff and campers also enjoyed
the presence of CVF´s guest basketball star, Tremmel Darden, forward for the Real Madrid basketball team. (pictured at right, center) In addition to drills, practice games, meals and free time, the campers also had the chance to hear  about Darden´s personal life story, his basketball experiences and his relationship with Christ. Abraham and other staffers will continue to follow-up with campers who expressed interest in hearing more about Christ.

Such exposure to a famous athlete and his faith in Christ, in addition to a week of training and discipline, fellowship and fun times, has left an indelible mark in the lives of so many Spanish children. Please pray for the seeds that were planted in their hearts this summer...that God would grant them eternal life and produce fruit 100-fold in them.

Also pray for Abraham and his fellow staff as they continue to offer the light and hope of Christ to youth all over Spain through the medium of sports.

Thank you so much for your prayers and financial support that allow me to be here to help train, coach and support Abraham in administrative and ministry skills so that he can be more effective in this amazing ministry to athletes.

Meet the Monkey on Mondays!

Every week, heck, every day God is working in our lives....but how aware are we? How have you seen Him show up this week? One struggle in communicating regularly was related to the "slow" nature of ministry. Sometimes, it is hard to see what God is doing. One rationale that dominated  my thinking is that maybe it is that God is working much more slowly here, so rather share news each month, I may have to wait, 6, 9, 12 months to have a story to tell. However, as I make this shift to share a "blip" from each day, it has revolutionized the way I see God's work here, in my personal life and in ministry. A specific tool I am using to deliver my messages and stories to you across the ocean is MailChimp, an email marketing platform online; and, although I am sure that I am not getting nearly as much out of MailChimp as I could, but just the fact to be getting any news out at all is a big step for me. Immigrant moms advancing together

An American, a Brazilian, a Spaniard and 9 Moroccan women walk into a neighborhood center....it sounds like the beginning of a joke, right? God has a great sense of humor! Let me tell you how this story works out.... My church in Spain has an amazing outreach ministry in a city neighborhood highly populated by Moroccan immigrants. While immigration has increased globally, Catalunya has one of the highest percentages of immigration world-wide.  This drastic and relatively rapid change is historic and also traumatic for a Spanish system that is not prepared to receive so many immigrants. We personally have seen the burdening effects of immigration in our schools, at our hospitals and in our neighborhoods.  Many of those who come from Morocco are the poorest of the poor. They arrive looking for work and a better life. They come without having learned the language.
