Fill In the Blanks

15 women from Morocco. They all showed up this week. They are eager to learn. A few can write. Most cannot.

They are so grateful for the smallest efforts. In the one hour a week I have with them on Friday mornings I want to give them all that I have. I want to give them a step up in the midst of this world economic crisis. All but one are married. All those who are married have at least 2 often 4-6 children that they are rearing. As we seek to bless these ladies, we will also be influencing scores of children.

Would you pray for them? Please pray that God would point out those who are open to hear more about Him. Please pray that He would reveal those that we can help in other areas in addition to language acquisition.

What? You don´t see anyone in the classroom pictured above? The students are very shy. They have a strong aversion to cameras, especially the older ones. So, out of respect, I try not to take pictures of them...but it´s hard because I want you to see their smiles, the lines on their faces, their colorful headcoverings, their big eyes as we learn new phrases. Try to imagine them. Fill in those blanks....

Next week, October 26, we will not meet because of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, the Feast of the Sacrifice. (It´s the story of Abraham sacrificing his son Ishmael and how God provided an animal in his place. Such a similar story to our Biblical story with Abraham and Isaac.) Please pray for opportunities to talk more with them about this holiday. Pray for each of these that the Lord would reveal to them His Lamb, Jesus Christ. Pray that He would use these Spanish classes as a starting point for conversations about Jesus.

Meet the Monkey on Mondays!

Every week, heck, every day God is working in our lives....but how aware are we? How have you seen Him show up this week? One struggle in communicating regularly was related to the "slow" nature of ministry. Sometimes, it is hard to see what God is doing. One rationale that dominated  my thinking is that maybe it is that God is working much more slowly here, so rather share news each month, I may have to wait, 6, 9, 12 months to have a story to tell. However, as I make this shift to share a "blip" from each day, it has revolutionized the way I see God's work here, in my personal life and in ministry. A specific tool I am using to deliver my messages and stories to you across the ocean is MailChimp, an email marketing platform online; and, although I am sure that I am not getting nearly as much out of MailChimp as I could, but just the fact to be getting any news out at all is a big step for me. Immigrant moms advancing together

An American, a Brazilian, a Spaniard and 9 Moroccan women walk into a neighborhood center....it sounds like the beginning of a joke, right? God has a great sense of humor! Let me tell you how this story works out.... My church in Spain has an amazing outreach ministry in a city neighborhood highly populated by Moroccan immigrants. While immigration has increased globally, Catalunya has one of the highest percentages of immigration world-wide.  This drastic and relatively rapid change is historic and also traumatic for a Spanish system that is not prepared to receive so many immigrants. We personally have seen the burdening effects of immigration in our schools, at our hospitals and in our neighborhoods.  Many of those who come from Morocco are the poorest of the poor. They arrive looking for work and a better life. They come without having learned the language.
